What Do Private Investigators Do?

Being a private investigator can be a challenging and rewarding career. PIs are useful to a variety of people for a variety of purposes — including locating missing people, conducting background checks, collecting information in civil disputes, and gathering evidence on infidelity. They may work regular 9-to-5 hours or odd shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. Private investigators often work alongside law enforcement, but many serve private clients directly through agencies like Investigation Hotline.

How Do You Become a Licensed PI in Ontario?

Requirements for becoming a private investigator vary by country and province. Many candidates complete a degree in a related field — primarily criminal justice — to build a foundation in the subject area.

To become a licensed private investigator in Ontario, an individual must complete a 50-hour training course, either online or in-class. The course should be taken through a trusted investigative training provider and registered with the Ministry of the Solicitor General (formerly the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services). Topics covered include industry background, provincial and federal law, criminal and civil law, the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, ethics, and investigative techniques.

After completing the course, the candidate must pass a provincial exam, obtain a completion number and certificate, and then apply for a licence. Many investigators pursue additional certification to specialize in areas where their skills are strongest.

Why Does Licensing Matter?

Once licensed, a PI can work for any investigative agency in Ontario — with law firms, insurance companies, corporations, or individuals on a case-by-case basis. Provincial licensing increases trustworthiness and employability. If you are hiring an investigator rather than becoming one, always confirm they hold a valid Ontario licence. Who Makes a Good Private Investigator?

Excellent private investigators demonstrate discipline, honesty, discretion, and attentiveness. They combine strong technological, observation, communication, and analytical skills. Former law enforcement officers, military personnel, paralegals, and photographers are among the professionals who often transition into private investigation.
