Private investigator duties are the tasks a licensed investigator is hired to do: gather facts the client can use, and stop at the edge of the law. The product is a report, not a confrontation.

What are a private investigator’s duties?

On a typical Ontario file the duties are narrow. Watch from a place the investigator is allowed to be. Check records the client has a right to use. Try to locate a person from lawful sources. Write down times, places, and what was actually seen. Hand that to the client or their lawyer.

That is different from a day-in-the-life account of the job. For how the work looks hour to hour, read what a private investigator actually does. This page is the duty list and the case types.

Case types those duties cover

  • Infidelity. Document who met, when, and where, from a lawful vantage. The duty is the record. It is not a plan for following someone onto private property.
  • Background. Check what a client is allowed to know before a hire, a contract, or a family decision. It is not a promise of secret databases.
  • Missing people. Use lawful leads to find someone. A locate is not a licence to enter a home or open an account.
  • Workplace and corporate files. Misconduct, time theft, and intellectual-property questions, documented so the company can decide. The investigator does not discipline the employee.

Service menus for those lanes are on the services page.

What is not part of the duty

A licence does not include hacking, trespass, planting a device, or pretending to be police. Those acts can make the file useless and can expose the client. Investigation Hotline refuses them.

Hiring a Toronto team is a different question from this duty list. Start on the Investigation Hotline homepage, or read how to hire a private investigator in Ontario.
