What are location services in a private investigation?
Location services are the investigative process of identifying where someone is, how they can be reached, or both. The work can support collections, family reunification, family-law enforcement, witness contact, and related civil needs. Law enforcement, collection agencies, and journalists also use locate methods, but a licensed private investigator works for a private client under privacy and surveillance rules that apply in Ontario.

What you receive: confirmed identifiers where available, address or contact leads, and notes on how the information was obtained.
What this is not: phone GPS “location services” settings, stalking, or illegal database access. Apple or Google device location features are a different topic.
When do clients need person location services?
Common triggers include a debtor who went quiet, a birth parent or relative who lost contact, a support payor who moved without notice, or a witness needed for a legal matter. Person location services focus on people, not store directories or map pins. If your goal is ongoing observation after someone is found, that is a separate scope under tracking and surveillance.
How do private investigators locate someone?
Investigators combine public records, court records, proprietary databases, employment and travel clues where lawful, social media review, and interviews with people who may know the subject. They may also check places the person used to frequent when that step is legal and useful. The edge over a civilian search is process: knowing which sources are allowed, how to verify hits, and how to avoid tips that violate privacy law.
A locate usually starts with what you already know (full name, date of birth, last address, phone, employer). Weak starting data slows results. Strong starting data shortens the path.
How is this different from a background check?
A background check reviews history and identity signals. Location services answer “where are they now?” or “how do I reach them?” Many files use both in sequence. If you are screening someone before they enter your home, use guidance on background checks before letting someone into your home. If you only need a current address or phone, say that at intake so the investigator does not bill for work you do not need.
