When Are People Most Likely to Cheat?

, | 19/05/2025

Infidelity doesn’t strike at random — it follows patterns.

Whether you have been cheated on, or if you have been the cheater yourself, infidelity continues to be one of the most harmful occurrences in the modern-day relationship. We continue to ask ourselves questions such as, “why do people cheat”? “Who is more likely to cheat?” “What are the telltale signs of a cheater?” One of the increasingly popular questions has become, “when are people most likely to cheat?” While the reasons people cheat vary, there are surprising times of year and phases in life when cheating becomes more likely.

Here’s what the research (and our experience) reveals:

The Calendar Has a Peak Cheating Day: February 13th

Known as “Mistress Day,” February 13th — the day before Valentine’s Day — sees a massive spike in secret meetups and dating app usage. Ashley Madison, a dating site for people seeking affairs, reports a 439% increase in sign-ups around this time.

Why? Cheaters often spend Valentine’s Day with their spouse… and the day before with someone else.

Key Times People Cheat in Relationships

“In our experience, most cases peak around major holidays or career shifts,” says lead investigator at Investigation Hotline.

1. Milestone Years: Year 1, Year 3, and Year 7

These are often “make or break” phases where infatuation fades, long-term compatibility is tested, and dissatisfaction can creep in.

2. During Emotional Distance

If someone feels neglected, rejected, or misunderstood — emotionally or physically — it increases the risk of seeking comfort elsewhere.

3. After Personal Setbacks

Periods of low self-esteem, career disappointment, or even grief can trigger a desire to “feel alive” again — sometimes in the form of an affair.

4. When Opportunity Knocks

Work trips, “new friends,” or late nights at the office often create the perfect storm: availability, secrecy, and temptation.

When Are Cheaters Most Active Online?

  • Monday at 2 PM is the most popular time to arrange a hookup online.

  • Dating sites see a surge in traffic right after long weekends and holidays, when people reflect on their relationships — and sometimes decide to stray.
